Lets say my site's homepage is PR 5, if i get an ssl certificate and the url changes to https://, do i lose that page rank since it's for http://blabla.com/index.htm. even if it doesn't, will it somehow affect it?

thanks

Nope. The url changes not because the additional s but its the change in protocol used to transmit the data.

Googles pagerank checksum includes the protocol, ie: http:// https://

The https:// form will start with 0 pagerank, just as if the page was brand new, as that is what it is to google's algo.

That is not the real problem tho. This can be corrected by simply using a 301 redirect from http:// to https:// which will allow google to see that it has permanantly changed, and they will shift the PR and links accordingly to the new format.

If you do NOT 301 the http to https then you run a risk of being seen as duplicate content, until googles algo figures out that the urls are really the same. (generally 3-6 months)
