It looks like the Google Directory has been updated, several sites that I added to my category that I edit at Dmoz months ago have appeared. Just thought I'd let everyone know

Thanks for the update. Unfortunately the categories where I added sites at DMOZ are all looking for volunteer editors so I think it will be awhile before I'm included in either directory.

I've actually thought of volunteering and might still. I just have so many things in front of me and getting into DMOZ isn't at the top of the list. It would be nice, but I think there are other things I can do that will be better for my business.
I also wouldn't want to volunteer just to get myself listed and then not bother with it. If I'm going to do it I want to be able to commit a little time to it.
Does anyone know if the DMOZ is ok with people volunterring to edit their own categories or is that the sort of thing they frown upon?
Thanks for the vote of confidence stOx. I hear it's not the easiest thing in the world to become an editor at DMOZ. Almost as hard or maybe even harder than getting listed.

Dmoz is very concerned about editor intentions, it just depends on how the Meta editor who reviews your application perceives your intentions. Just make sure you read the editing guidelines before you attempt to edit a directory, and be sure to pick a category that is small (less than 50 sites) as they don't feel comfortable putting new editors in large categories. Just be honest and read the guidelines, that is my only advice.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to look into read through the guidelines and see if I think I'm a good fit. Fortunately the category for my site only has about a dozen sites listed at the moment so maybe that's in my favor.

I wish they would just charge, if they charged just $4 a inclusion then they could hire independant reviewers, it would clean up all the corruption and the directory would be useful again.

LOL for the last time there is no corruption. Just because it lists there are 70,000+ editors, doesn't mean they are active or still have editing ability. That number has built up over time, there are really only a fraction of that number that edit on a regular basis. Just be patient, all links get reviewed in time.

I think the DMOZ is still a pretty good directory. In fact it's the only one I ever use. Sure I wish my site was listed about 2 seconds after I submit it, but like I've said elsewhere the listing alone isn't going to make or break my site.
RideConnection I looked a little at the guidelines for becoming an editor and when I can I'll be looking for three sites under the category I want to apply to. I'm thinking it wouldn't be the best idea to use my own site as one of the three.
As I mentioned above it's not at the top of my priority list, but I'm keeping my eyes open for sites that fit with the category.
Thanks again for the info.

Just be honest with your application... honesty goes a long way. And as long as you declare your affiliations (because if you don't and you give your real name they will find them somehow or it becomes obvious when you edit a site's description 50 times as an editor lol) you should be set if you read the guidelines, don't have spelling errors, and pick an appropriate category for a new editor. Just make sure you search dmoz for the sites you want to list in your application, and be sure that they meet the guidelines as well. It took me well over an hour of critiquing my application before I sent it in, and I got approved. It was the 5th time I applied, but it was the first time I thoroughly read the guidelines and took time with my application.
Good luck

dmoz may carry weight with google rankings but as a directory aimed at being clear and beneficial to people surfing the web, not so much.
Most of the sites in dmoz are very old, they look like crap and have little benefit to people. Maybe commercial categories have a bit better quality sites, but in general im not very impressed.
I think if they're going to run the directory cleanly and efficiently something big needs to be done. Either accpet more editors or as mentioned above charge a listing fee and hire people to edit categories properly.
