I got this link to a video of a lecture given by a Google employee to university students. Ever wondered how Google stored so much data and how come it is so fast?

I don't understand a lot of the stuff such as what does it mean by shards od date, and why does Google have different index and document servers. It would be nice if someone could summarize.
