Google has agreed to partner with Earthlink to create a "WiFi mesh" across the city of San Fransisco.
Google will provide a "low speed" ad supported option, and for a relatively low $20 per month, Earthlink will provide a faster 300kb/s service.
The operation will require 1,500 transmitters across the city, most of which attached to street-lights.
Could this eventually be the end of wired broadband as we know it? How will the companies cope with abuse? Only time will tell
