My site, which has been live for 18 months, attained a PR4 across most pages after three months.

Recently I added three new pages which attained a PR5 after only two weeks!

Two questions:
1. How is this possible?
2. Why are they ranking higher than all of the other pages on the site?

This has been happening a lot.. Noboody knows why.

Probably was adding links to important sites before (1 week) google indexing and page ranking the site.

You probably got a few high links on a high pr page from somewhere without knowing it.

I do however have another theory which may be completely wrong but my maths isnt good enough to prove or disprove it. The google PR equation relies on the number of incoming links, and the numbers of incoming links to the pages where those links are coming in from to assign a value. As i understand it you get a kind of "which came first the chicken or the egg" scenario so the way the equation works is to put a predicted value in which may be completely wrong, but after running the equation x amounts of times you finally end up with a figure that is pretty close to accurate. I believe the reason new sites recently indexed rank high is due to this fact and the reason that they subsequently dissapear from SERPS is because this process is going on.

I may be completely off the mark but it makes sense to me.

Yep that pretty much sums it up, it takes several runs of the indexing process to fully analyse the matrix of connections to any given page.

My site lives for more than 2 years, It has PR3, in recent 2 months I built a link exchange directory It has PR5, very quick while the main domain stays the same. I really do not know why link directory can get Pr5 even I did not do any effort.

I think google is crawling the web at regular intervals of 2 weeks
we started our website last dec (Dec 2005) and we got a page rank of 2 in the month of Apr 2006.
i dont know if i can mention my website any way the whole website www.freesolutions.be has only page rank of 2 but a single page put for the ads as solutions.html got a page rank of 3 in just 2 weeks. That page contains a lot or praise worthy things about google. I do think google page rank has some thing to do with praising google high too.

Absolutely nothing to with it at all

Yep it has nothing to do with saying nice things about Google. There could be a lot of reasons why that page has a higher PR the mostly likely being either it has more or higher PR links pointing to it or as Guerilla and Chris mentioned it's just the nature of the way PR is initially calculated, which is through an iterative process.

i ve been up for about 5 months and have about 12000 links to my site name when i google it, but cannot find it anywhere with just keywords. I have lots of links. Whats the problem?

The theory that new sites won't rank very well in google for competitive search terms (apart from an initial honeymoon period) for up to a year. Nothing has been documented by google, so this theory was conceived by webmasters from their own experiences. Some people don't believe it exists and some do. Interesting... I wonder if they've made a subtle change to the ranking system to make sure MSN doesn't get an opening. I've had numerous sites get placed quite high in MSN in a matter of days.

It's easy to get a high page ranking - but doing it so fast before you get out of the "sandbox" can make google suspicious. I suggest you start slow and then work your way up. But that's just my opinion

I have never made a site before. But I got one of those software that makes webpages. I decided to start a poker site. I don't have much content but I really work hard to promote it.

I even had a paid press release. I offered links and got a few link request even from unrelated site.

I went live on March 13,2006 and just last week I got an email from one of my friends thats been in this website thing for a long time told me I have a PR5 rating, I didn't even know what this is.

So i did my research got a google toolbar and see for myself. I got this PR5 in little over 4 weeks. You guys seem to make a big deal of this. I am just know relizing the importance of this PR thing.

Saddly though my site has not returned the income I was hoping for it ranks in the 400,000 in alexa and have a few hits a day. I frankly don't know the direction of this site.
