I had never heard of this before today! Kind of scary to me. I am not sure that I yet understand what it is all about.

I saw that there were protection software programs out there but what
are the big search engines doing about it?

I guess if there is a way the crooks will find it, abuse it, expose it..

I'm not sure you need to be scared about it. Click fraud is just people clicking on contexutal advertising links like AdSense artifically. Often it might be a spider or robot that has been programmed to click on those links or it can simply be a site owner who clicks on their own links or has friends or family click on the links.

If you're a publisher just make sure you, friends, and family don't click the links and if you're an advertiser then for the moment you probably just have to trust the company you advertise with to determine the validity of any clicks.

You're right though that if there's a way someone will look for and most likely find a way to abuse and manipulate any system.
