Whether you use tables or divs will have a negligible effect on seo. Don't worry about it. There are more important factors to consider.

I don't agree completely.
People tend to get hung up on the little details of SEO, and say "There are other factors to consider." but the fact of the matter is that no one, or handful of factors, make or break a sites ranking. They all work together.
Now some table based sites might be uneffected, however sometimes tables cause the content to be broken up in a way that it is not read the same top to bottom via code like a CSS-P site would.

hi ,
Dont worry , Using Divs is very good for SEO.
Because while you use Tableless layout then we are seperating structural and presentational ( html and CSS) , this is advantage.
Google Crawls more effectively.
goahead all the best

Not sure what you mean by this. Can you give an example?

There is no advantage of DIV over tables as far as SEO is concern what it helps in 2 points
1. Organize the site and easily maintain it.
2. You tend to decrease the code and code to content ratio decreases and hence the content is found more easily to bots but that does not mean you cant achieve the same in tables. Now how much does code to content ratio helps in SEO is a matter of discussion.

Actually, divs do have one small but important advantage in terms of SEO AND user experience...if done correctly, you can put the content of your site first and the menus/navigation/ads/header/footer and all that other crap after.
Most people don't know how to do it and it's not documented in too many places, that's all.

Is there any evidence to back this up? I'd like to see it, because I don't believe that it makes a difference.

What a great idea!! This had never occurred to me, but I've been wanting to improve my navigation, and considering " Suckerfish" to present a menu across the top of the page ... ideally with a sub menu for different parts of my site ( photos, articles, software ). It shouldn't be too hard to put the actual code at the bottom of the page and style it to appear at the top.
I don't now for sure that will have an effect on SEO, but it might. A lot of people seem to think text at the top of the page is given more weight than toward the bottom. And that seems to agree with the way people scan pages instead of reading them. Not really ideal for long articles people actually sit down and read, though.

As for your sites - are you sure the only thing in the grand seo landscape that changed was the tables being replaced with divs? I'll wager many things chnaged that you weren't watching and they led to your ranking changes. If you don't isolate and monitor ALL the influencing factors, you can't say for certain that dumping tables helped your rankings.

A web site full of tutorials for web design and css says that technique X is great for SEO and hey BTW, we have lots of information about doing X. The result, lots of repeat traffic, and back links.
Maybe they are providing a better example of SEO.
Here's an idea:
Write a bunch of informative pages that help with validating strict XHTML/CSS. Then tell a bunch of people that strict valid XHTML will improve their SEO. Results, people keep coming back to your site, for help to make things valid. People start linking to your site as they share the information.
