Preference to H1 tags?

I heard that using <H1>tags</H1> are preferred by google and other search engines. This is not limited to H1 but rather gives the SE the ability to rank importance of content. Obviously the appearance of the H1 tag and others would be defined in the CSS.

But is there any truth to this? Has anyone heard of this or something like it?

Thanks
-Mike

<h1>, <h2>, etc tags are most certainly part of the algorithm and any text in them probably gets a little extra weight. Still they should be used properly. It makes no sense to have more than one <h1> on a page for instance. That defeats the point of structuring your html. There is also the condition of over optimization. An overoptimized page can end up doing worse than a non-optimized page as it can be seen as spam.

Use heading tags to structure your content as you normally would, but definitely use keywords in them where it make sense to use them.

i heard that h2 tags are getting more importance than h1 tag, because h1 is over used in SEO.

but i dont know how true it is.

All myth. Its just that if you have more than one h1 that will diminish the good effect from h1 because therotically title/h1 should be summary of what page contains. You cannot have a substitute for any tag

Exactly. There is such a thing as over optimization. You should use headings to structure your content. That's their purpose. So you should have one and only one <h1> on any given page. You might have a couple or three <h2>s and <h3>s etc.

You should use keywords in all of them if it makes sense to, but you shouldn't just put keywords in in order to rise in the results. You're still writing for visitors first.

Most things you do on page will have a minor effect on where you rank. That doens't mean you shouldn't do any of them. Add a bunch of minor things together and they can make a difference, but optimizing a page isn't about stuffing in a keyword somewhere you think it might make a difference. That will just lead to over optimizing things and probably do more harm than good.
