Just wondering, because my last site used [brag] 1 day [/brag]. I don't understand anything

From minutes to never. It all depends on how easily google can find you.

normal are 1-2 days if you have links on some good pr sites. but there is no guarantee. one of my sites nedded more than 3 weeks even if this site has the same link number from the same sites as another one and the other site was inderxed in 2 days. google is a big miracle just hope and fear...

Quickly if you are linked from a site that is spidered regularly. I always add my sites immediately through http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl

But I've read not to submit them to the SE as getting the quality links is better in being recognized.

It depends on how many other sites are linking to yours. The more sites that link to on of your pages the sooner any search engine will find and index that page. If you build a site that's easy for spiders to traverse and get some links pointing to the site it shouldn't take long.
