I also think page rank is not a really important thing to worry yourself about. the position you achieve in a search engine is all that really matters - especially if you are trying to get people to see your site. You can have a page rank of 0 and still appear top of someones Google search for some keywords or other.
Among various sites I have, one of the best is a blog called Strange Games - for those two words in Google it is usually positioned either 2nd or 3rd out of 60million results. Without trying it has also got a Google page rank of 5 - yet I'm only aware of about 6 inbound links, none from anything important.
And....for all the above, although I love my blog to bits and wouldn't part with it....it gets on average 12 visitors a day most of whom click right back out of it. The one occasional reader really pleases me
