Need some help on redirecting pages

I have recently update my website (and I didn't notice that the files were automatically saved as .html whereas the old pages were .htm) Therefore, I have want to redirect 301 my old pages.

Therefore, I have created an .htaccess for each website and uploaded it (as ASCII mode).

However, when I try to type in the URL's of the old pages i get "page not found 404", instead of being redirected to the new pages.

The codes in my .htaccess files all look like this (of course the page name changes for each page)

redirect 301 /var/www/surgery/about_us.htm http://www.hygeiasurgery.com/about_us.html

I really hope somebody can help me with this??

Wow, that was silly
Has google come to your site since then? If not that many times, I'd say just rename the files back to .htm and you should be ok

in your redirect you are redirecting a physical path to a URL

Both should be urls

Thanks for the link. As I understand from this article i must type the path (directory) of the old pages and the URL of the new pages. Is this correct?

Does it create a problem for redirecting that the old pages don't exist anymore? (I of course have backup, but they are no long in the folder on the web server)

Will it work if I type the URL of both the old and new pages (instead of the path) like chrishurst suggested?

you don't need to put /var/www... i don't think...

just put it like this:

redirect 301 /surgery/about_us.htm http://www.hygeiasurgery.com/about_us.html

does that seem right? I just tried it this way and worked for me today...
