timbre, article submission is one of those things that can work well for you, or it can work poorly for you. The submission has very little to do with the process in relative terms, however. This isn't to say it's unimportant...it has to be submitted SOMEWHERE. Just not to 5000 different sites, that's all.
The key to article submission is actually the quality of the article and how unique it is. You will receive more traffic to a well-written article about a unique subject than you will from a poorly written article and/or an article about a subject that has been covered to death.
Give people something they'll WANT to read, and they'll read it. The challenge is in finding something unique.
Once you do that, the submission is a no-brainer. Just make sure you do it manually, because many sites are starting to block/fight the automated services (it's counterproductive to their own efforts to some extent.) You can submit to a few article sites with a well-written article and end up with a better result than 500 article sites with a crappy site.
