I got approved for google adsense - but really how do you make money from this? maybe im just slow could you share some insight?

Basically adsense is a lot of hard work & clever usage of websites etc.

Are you asking about the specifics like how clicks, impressions etc work or how to make your site work for you?

Make a useful site for your visitors and then try and get as much traffic as you can. Adverts served up by Google will be related to your content so there's a chance that your visitors might be interested in them. For every user that clicks on an advert, you get a small of $.

I great method to make money from adsense it to create a blog targeted around a niche.

For example I had a blog about golf, and I simple added adsense to the sidebar of the blog. You can then make more money by recommending and reviewing other products you are affiliate with in your blog posts.

Use inventory.overture.com to find great keywords or niches around which you can create a blog.
