rather than me going to google, typing in the search and searching each page

You can try Digital Point's Tool. You need to register, but it's free.

I'm not sure if it will tell you if you're 1,476 for a specific phrase. There's a limit to how far any tool will check. Also if you're ranking that low it really doesn't make much difference. There's really no difference between ranking #750 or #7,500.

I think there are some other free tools out there, but I'm not finding them at the moment. They're lost in a sea of bookmarks. Most of the others I have won't check beyond 100 I think.

now, I'm registered with google for:

adwords,
adsense,
analytics,
webmaster tools

and I don't know how to find this api key
even did search in google

Sorry about that. It looks like just last month Google switched things up and doesn't offer the all in one API key. It looks like they now give out separate ones for each API.

Here's a lits of all the different Google APIs and you can get a key by signing up for any of them. I'm not sure which one the digital point tool will need, but I would guess it's the search api key.

Gotta agree; the only time I'd expect a user to click next page more than once or twice in a web search is if they're looking for very specific info, and most pages are unrelated. On the other hand, I see search queries in my web stats that I can't possibly be in the top thousand for - not sure what's going on there.

Well the index would be something different. You can still tell if you're in the index without knowing where you rank.

There's just a point where it's not going to be very useful to know exactly where you rank. If you rank #50 for a certain term then you can make certain changes or get a few more links and perhaps get the page to move up to #15 and then #8, etc.

If you're ranking #5,000 you're much farther away than a few links or a few changes. It wouldn't make a difference if you were 5000 or 5200. The extra 200 sites between you and #1 makes no real difference in what you would do to optimize the page or the site as a whole.

Matt I'm not really sure what you're asking.

My thoughts about Google and search engines in general is if there's something they can reliably track it's possible they will use it as a measure of whether a page is more or less relevant to a query. That doesn't mean use everything they can track or even ever will, but I think it's possible they will look for ways to use all information they can collect.

The Google Patent of 2005 mentions "scoring the document based, at least in part, on the characteristics of traffic associated with the document.".

I'm uncertain whether this is a good idea, but traffic affecting rankings has certainly been discussed.
