Check out www.headweb.co.uk.

It has 5/10 pr with no backlinks on google. How can they do this?

I have been looking around and it seems like alot of sites are ranking a high PR with hardly any or no backlinks. Even some of my own sites are doing this.

I am confused ! I have been out of the optimisation game for a while but i thought PR was calculated mainly by linking popularity.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks,

G

I think your main problem is that you are looking at the URL with a period at the end of the address. Leave the ending simply .uk

I have looked at the back links and google shows roughly 34 with about half being from their own site.

If you leave a period or anything different in a url, Google PR will show grey as if banned even though it really isn't.

The best way to get high ranks is to analyze the heck out of your competitors. Keep it up.
Good Luck

Back links confuse me. If I do a backlink search on my site, http://www.necrotania.com/ I only get 1 link. If I search for Necrotania I can find a bunch of sites that have links to mine, and I still have a PR of 4.

Am I understanding this correctly or am I missing something?

You may have more backlinks to your homepage but Google has not caught up and showed them yet.

When you search for Necrotania and find site linking to you, are they:

1. Linking to your home page (links to internal pages won't show as a backlink to www.necrotania.com but as a backlink to that particular page.
2. Using a direct link (not a redirect link or something).

Alltheweb counts 62 sites linking to ya...

I have absolutely no backlinks and PR 3/10 and my sub pages have 2/10 (i do have quite a high saturatiion though). I think since xmas change they must have factored other things in other than just backlinks. Any ideas what it may be?

I see 3 major links to this site in google. and that in it self could be enought to give it a rating of 5. But when you look at links to a site in the google suggestion bear in mind that it only list the one that are over a certain Page rank , That perviously was PR4 but looks like they may include some high ranking PR3. If you use the contain the term button their is four pages of links to the website, I guress this is where it get the main chuck of it's PR from.

Also another point to take into consideration is a website in itself can have a high PR without having any links coming from outside sites as long as it quite large and has the Page ranking bunch up at the home page.

I don't believe google has added in any new factors into how page ranking is generated. How you rank in searchs now that a different story.

It is when I read threads like this that I know Google has a sense of humor. Just like the designers who created high heals for women and ties for men.

Turn the toolbar off if it bugs you so much!

The contain the term button:

If you type in your whole webaddress into the google search engine it will return the webpage and some other selections.

one being:

Find web pages that contain the term "www.yoursite.com"

this will return all of the pages list that have it as a term, their are not necessarily link to you but I find it's a good indication.

Google will only display backlinks on pages with a PR4+.

I know that there are about 100 backlinks to one site that I work on, however Google only shows around 20 of them.

All are PR4+ links.

You probably have sites that link to you that are less than PR4. While these links still pass value, they just don't show as "links"

I have seen backlinks at Google with a PR3 for the page that had the link on it, and I saw one just tonight as a matter of fact. And the opposite is true also ... I have seen no backlinks in the Google results from pages of PR4 or more.

The backlinks are a sampling at any rate and PR has nothing to do with it. In my opinion, Google only shows backlinks that they consider to be valuable regardless of PR. PR may play into it to some extent and that is why people are trying to put a cut-off line at PR4 ... but that is not the case.

I am with RonnieTheDodger on this one.
their is a backlink cut-off to a certain degree indeed... but it aint just PR-based in my opinion. I've seen PR2 and 3 links showing up as backlinks - and these sites were NEVER PR4.

Could anyone show me some examples...

As far as I am concerned (I may be wrong) unless the page linking to you has a PR4+, it will not show up in a link:www.mydomain.com.

Agin, I may be wrong, but one explanation for what you have seen, may be that the site previously had a PR4+, but for whatever reason, dropped to a 2 or 3 or whatever.

Google may not have had a chance to update the backlink logs between the PR drop and and you performing the link check...

As I mentioned, I work on sites that I KNOW have at least 60 or 70 not redirect backlinks. However when I perform a link:www.mydomain.com only the pages with a PR4+ are shown.

If either of you guys could show me some examples of what you have described, that would be great...

I hope you can prove me wrong.
