PageRank seems to be a recursive formula; your PR is decided by not just how many sites point at you, but what their PR is. I'm not sure if PR is equivalent to high quality, it seems the "non-toolbar" one is.

But it also seems like you know a quality site when you see one. A blog with four entries definitely isn't, but any site you like enough to recommend to somebody else, if they linked to you, that would be a good thing. As a photographer, I'd be better off with a link from Art Wolfe's gallery than somebody you've never heard of before.

But that's all about search visibility and mostly ignores the traffic you might get from any of these links.

How long the site has been online is another criterion. The way you are getting the backlink is a factor. Is it places in a page with lot of other external links? Does it have no follow tag attached etc.?

I hve read from an article that google give priority to quality number of backlinks. If you can get quality backlinks it means that your site is important and trusted also.

I found that quality backlinks come from private owned sites. Not those general population directories. They can even lower your rank if you use too many of them. Theres a few good programs out there that get you "private" backlinks: Payperlink.net has a software that automatically trades links for you with only private sites (which is probably the best), and axandra software, and seo elite.com. Its all supply and demand. If anyone can get into a free directory, its not that valuable. To have your link on a private site that doesnt accept everyone, thats how you really can boost your ranking.

Hope I helped anyone

I think "rankmeplease" is right, except maybe in his conclusion. The supply-and-demand theory is right, if we call everybody a hero, then nobody is. If everybody can add themself to wikipedia then the engines learn wikis are bad places to look for good sites.

I don't think that means you need to pay for it, though.

and anywhere you can automatically exchange links is not going to somewhere you find "high quality" links.

I would say that you need links form an older website. this will help you. this does not mean PR8 pages. I just mean websites that have been around that Google considers an authority.
