Can someone please explain to me how it works in short. And how I can get a high page rank for my website?

A better question would be "What does page rank do?" The answer to that one is "Not much, really; it's a tie-breaker when Google needs to order two equally relevant pages, and it lets you sell links to ignorant people."

Page rank measures how many links point to a certain URL, and how trusted those links are. They're not all created equal, not by a long shot. Any link you can create yourself isn't going to help very much.

So the way to increase your PR is to build a web site people will want to link to. Naturally - without prodding.

You can do things like put the site in your signature link ( although you probably want to use anchor text instead of your URL ), submit it to directories, and so on, and this will help a little bit, but only get you so far.

Google PR is one of the driving force behind the search engine ranking pages. Its the toolbar PR which is not what I am referring to but when the toolbar PR updates the actual PR and the toolbar PR should be very close.

PageRank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web. Google figures that when one page links to another page, it is effectively casting a vote for the other page. The more votes that are cast for a page, the more important the page must be. Also, the importance of the page that is casting the vote determines how important the vote itself is. Google calculates a page's importance from the votes cast for it.

PageRank is Google's way of deciding a page's importance. It matters because it is one of the factors that determines a page's ranking in the search results.

Speculation.
The real PR value is NOT KNOWN publicly. It is definitely NOT an integer value as in some of the technical papers from the google stanford days, it is appears that the total PR distribution is equal to 1.

It doesn't matter, REAL PR is a small factor. It is NOT an important factor.

Some of the factors that affect google's PR calculation are: Age of your domain, backlinks, good neighborhood (who do link to you), etc. You get high PR when people link back to you, in other words, people find your site worth paying attention to. So they link to (vote for) you. Vote from an already important site carries higher weight.

PR that varies from 0 to 10 maybe calculated on a kind of logarithmic scale (base unknown). That means PR doesn't increase proportionately with increase in backlinks, etc.

PR may be artificially increased but that obviously doesn't increase your website importance. Better we concentrate our efforts to quality of products we offer and let people vote for it. PR is just one among numerous other factors (as rightly said - tie breaking element) that search engines take into account in order to list a site in the search results.

Wow, what a fountain of misinformation that was. PageRank, as Paul Davis pointed out using the Google link, is nothing more than a summary calculation of the value of all of the links pointing to a particular page, based on all of the links pointing to those links, etc. and so on.

Age of the recipient's domain has NOTHING, repeat NOTHING to do with PR.

As far as the "PR doesn't increase proportionately" part, I don't even know where to begin describing what's wrong with that statement. If backlinks increase, so too will internal PR by the value passed from the individual backlinks. Proportion has nothing to do with it; it isn't "the more backlinks you get, the higher it gets", or "the more backlinks you get, the less you'll see PageRank go up because you go from 4 to 5", or whatever silly theory someone has.

It's a value passed from one page to the other, and it varies depending on the quality of the passing page. That's it, that's all. Baby goes to sleep.

The logarithmic curve that external PageRank is believed to be based on has nothing to do with this either; a logarithmic curve merely suggests that as one traverses the X axis of a graph from left to right, the Y axis of a curve will not increase by as much and eventually will increase so infinitesmally that it won't matter. As the PageRank explanation of earlier suggests, the increase in internal PageRank (the one Google would use) doesn't follow any scale or rhyme or reason, since the inbound links that Google would have indexed won't follow any particular scale, rhyme or reason either.

Google page rank is calculated using complicated math but its very simple to get a higher page rank...

links...links...and more links.

the higher the page rank of the page thats linking to yours the better.

Link on a High PR site's will help and also consider the relevancy for other benefits on SE's.

Correction: Age of domain may not be a factor in Google Page Rank calculation (Adam, thanks pointing it out.). However, older domains may get a slight advantage in search engine rankings.

To find out what your site’s PageRank is, you have to download the Google toolbar. The toolbar gives you an easy way to check your backlinks. This can also be done manually on Google, by typing 'link:www.yoursite.com' (without the ' marks) in the search box.

I disagree that age is not a factor in page rank. I believe it is a strong factor.

For example, my online-etraining site sat around for several months before I did anything with it, and now it has a Google PR of 3 even though I only have 4 or 5 training courses posted. I have a few other sites with many more links than this one, but they haven't been around as long, and they're still at PR 0, 1, and 2.

Also, I like to consider more than just Google PR, such as number of links from Technorati or Delicious, or the Alexa Rank, or the position on Google for the first four words of title tag on target URL. Your experience is similar to me. one of my site is yet to be actually launched. It is just having an "under construction message" for an year or so but you know it has got a page rank. Nobody visits this site except google.

That fact actually convinced me that there may be some relationship of PageRank with Age. However, rarely will you see this fact is noticed in SEO articles.

There is ABSOLUTELY NO RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AGE AND PageRank. NONE WHATSOEVER.

Page Rank for any particular URI is created by the PR of the pages linking to that page. Nothing more, Nothing less
There is no age factor, No "content relevance" factor, No anchor text factor. Nothing else adds anything to the PR.

The only reason for PR to increase with site longevity (NOT THE AGE as you see it) is the simple fact that it may well have collected some links along the way, even if they are only from scrapers sites etc.

There are a LOT of scraper sites, more than I realized. Our posts here are mirrored on a small handful of sites. Wikipedia has half a dozen mirrors. I don't seem to have one, but I participate in some photography related sites and forums, and post to show off new photos I'm proud of. At first, I was shocked to learn I had links from answers.com and sites like it. Even algebra.com, which is a scraper/mirror site.

This is all going on along with organic links, like when another webmaster likes something you put together and links to it. It's easy, and probably common, to gather links over time without knowing about it.
