I have a Google Alert setup on a string of text.

I one day I got an alert on it as I had added it to a page (this forum). It took under a week for it to be added to the page and then be indexed in Google.

Now I have removed the string of text. How long will it take to stop showing up in a Google search, or is there no set time?

There is no set time. It will stop showing up as soon as Google reindexes the page in question.

If you go into the webmaster tools in Google, you'll be able to see when the last time your site was indexed. You should be able to see approximately when the next index is. www.google.com/webmaster/tools My last index was April 16th.

Thanks but its not my site. Its this one in fact. It was a forum post I made.

It really depends how important Google feels that particular thread is. They go on their own schedule, but eventually they get things done.

Is it cleared up by now?

no one knows...but last week i observe that they have been updating...though not sure if it has been done...was it really done?/

Yep. Well its not showing up in the first few pages and it was #3 last week.

I think Google are still updating because some of my site got a PR today.
