I just updated my website and removed the clutter, so i thought. my previous pagerank was PR4. I just checked and my page rank is now PR3. I've added lots more links to my website and many more new items. Why would this be and how can I bring it back up to 4 or higher. thanks for any help you can give.

To increase PR get links from pages with high PR, But understand that PR means nothing and by chasing it you are completely wasting your time.

PR doesn't take in to account the quality of a site or the quality of it's content, So updating your site and removing clutter would have no effect on PR. You could have nothing but thousands of blank pages, It still wouldn't effect PR.

It probably means that somewhere between the real PR to toolbar PR exports some of your backlinks got devalued or dumped.

How about something useful to look at? What about conversions / sales / enquiries? Have they changed at all?

my visitors have decreased as well as sales. no change in inquiries if that makes sense. it's hard to evaluate. your right, who cares about page rank... i want more traffic!!

Well it's weird, this most recent update is strange.

Loads of sites have gone now in Page Rank. I was talking to a guy about 5 minutes ago who has a very strong gardening website which has over the past month had a lot of advertising and gained loads of inbound links. However his sites page rank has decreased.

Maybe this is because more sites are gaining high PR's (4,5,6,7) as a few years ago only very authoritative sites could get this kind of Page rank.
