The sandbox is like an aging delay, preventing new sites from ranking under certain phrases. It's not a punishment for sites that violate some Google policy.

"sandbox" how I do dislike that term.
Your pages only rank for very low competition phrases or exact phrases (in quotes) from your pages.

'Sandbox' where did you find the term sandbox? an official Google site probably not.
There is no 'sandbox' gain quality links to your site create on page original content. Did i mention links---------------. Just how do new movie sites go straight in on position 1 for keyword search terms ? They have high quality links from the likes of pr 9 sites (yahoo). Google trusts these sites and a link from the homepage of a pr 9 site will increase your web sites positioning regardless if its new or old.

sorry guys, no such thing as a sandbox - if a new site is cleanly coded it will rank immediately. The problem arises when you get over anxious and start pumping links into the site and 'over optimising'. I know, I've had many a new site rank well and, having tried too hard, seen others fail.

Where a page ranks has absolutely nothing to do with how cleanly coded that page is (unless it's very badly coded). Your statement completely ignores the idea of 'competition'.
New sites often find that their pages don't rank for competitive search terms. You can call it what you like, but that phenomenon is common.

Hey, I'm curious here too. As far as now, I'm not sure about sandbox and all. Following the discussions. I think vangogh needs to see this.

Can we give this quote a sticky all by itself? Seriously, let's bold this, underline it, highlight it and stick it into every PageRank thread.
This is the only thing that anyone concerned about a sandbox needs to know. It's a silly term created by sillier people who overoptimize their sites at the best of times and get punished for it.
Brilliant, webrouser. 100% brilliant. And it's about **** time someone other than Hirst, Forrest, John, Steve and I said this.
Coding is a factor, whether people choose to acknowledge it or not (usually the crappier coders tend to hate this idea, although I've seen some good coders say the same thing). And a site doesn't have to be X months or years old to gain ranking under competitive keywords and phrases. I've been picking up users for the last few weeks for all sorts of "gas strike" related terms (including "Gas strike" itself) and before that, I was picking up all sorts of Raptors playoff ticket phrases. The site in question (my blog) is not even 2 months old.

Whether the sandbox exists as a clause in Google's algorithm or not is debatable, but missing the point. It's really not worth worrying about.

Well ... there are a lot of different types of optimization. Writing about something important, true, and a little bit unpopular is the type of optimization Google loves. Plus, your May 15 gas strike article is well written, well illustrated, and sparked a good discussion. It's actually a pretty good example of organic seo that people might want to look at and think about following.

It's also a great example of how to piss people off without even trying. Thanks, Forrest.
You're right about the different types of optimization, but quality stuff triumphs over all else in my humble opinion. (At least it had better, or my blog is screwed!)
