I am sorry if this sounds dumb. Fact is, I have submitted my website details to google's directory. Still, when I search for keywords, I don't find it. Please help

There's a lot more to it than submitting to Google. In fact you didn't even need to submit to Google at all. Google isn't a directory. It's a search engine which operates very differently than a directory. Just because they know you exist doesn't mean they'll return your pages in search results.

There's no such thing as a dumb question. The question is very general though, and can't really be answered in a single post. We do talk about it a lot in the Search Engine Talk and Internet Marketing and SEO Talk forums so you may want to start reading through the threads there.

The learning isn't going to come in a day though.

You have to consider that there are likely thousands if not millions of other sites that also want their pages to show up for the same keywords. Google and the other engines need to decide which are the ones they should show first and they base that decision on hundreds of factors.

Mostly what you're looking for is knowledge about SEO. Read what you can find here and at other forums and blogs. We're happy to answer questions, but know that the more specific you can be with a question the more likely the answer will be helpful.
