GoogleBot and a deleted Sitemap!

I opened a wordpress based blog near 20days ago. I submitted the site to google via form to be indexed. Googlebot appeared after a while and I was actually indexed (only the homepage).

After one week, using the proper wordpress plugin, I built and submitted the sitemap. Google fetched the sitemap short thereafter and vanished in thin air. After some days no new page was added to the index. I've no truly quality inbound links, except for technorati tag and a couple more.

I decided (stupidly?) to delete the sitemap to let google crawl the site on its own and to add the site to my google webmaster tool (verified). After that googlebot only queried (HEAD not GET) the homepage twice in the last week or so as If it was expecting sitemap submission. Technorati keeps indexing me not bad at all.

I become quite worried. Do you have any good suggestion?

The site is:
BresciaMangiaeBevi
Thank you

It's links, and not a sitemap, that will get you indexed. Because anybody can build an xml file using a tool, it doesn't tell Google that your content is important enough for them to index.

Okay, technically I meant crawled.

Google doesn't go around pinging DNS to learn about new web sites. You can throw a site up, and at that point it's an island, completely isolated from the rest of the web. You need to tell your friends about it for them to know, and you need to have links pointing to your site from others that Google is already aware of for them to know you exist.

Once they realize you're out there ( and it seems like their submit function doesn't tell them - people complain about submitting to Google six months ago and still not being indexed ) they'll send their spider your way to crawl over your site, read the content, and decide what they think of you.
