Create five splogs, clutter up a landscape that is borderline oversaturated already, and use them to "promote" a site that obviously can't stand on its own merit and needs some silly shortcut to get itself ranked based on the outdated opinion that Google PageRank is the magic bullet to increased search engine visibility.

Its true, I've done it a few times, google scans gmail inbox content to serve the ads, it will pick up links from there

Assessing content for serving appropriate ads isn't anything to do with crawling pages to add them to Google's index.

If a spider crawled your emails to detect links that would be a BIG invasion of privacy. I think...

Nope - not joking and it was (is) a major concern for gmail users, google claim your email is only 'read' by computers - not humans, but they are read and and the content is assessed to generate relevant ads, but a by-product is that links detected are passed to google for spidering, of course I don't know this for sure but a mate told me this, and i tried it and was in the google index within a day or two without having submitted the site to anyone or posted links etc - either google got the domain from who-is or from gmail in my opinion, have done it more than once since - same result

How does who know what?

gmail email would be "read" by the mediabot, The media bot doesn't pass information to the google bot for indexing in the serach engine (unless it's to update the cache after googlebot has already indexed the page).

If the content really was useful you wouldn't have to use any short cuts or tricks.

Speaking of search engines, try this query: "create a blog at all these places ..." Seven results. It's shocking, but this isn't the only one signed off with "Grab Over $14,237 Worth Of Ebooks And Software FREE!" Not what seems to be the original source of the advice, but who cares about plagiarism when you're telling people to spam, right?
