I have a website which consistently was ranking 12-16 for that last 6 months for a single keyword that was not highly competitive, but its trend was upward. The link would be to my main page (which is not the most relevant page for the keyword)

The last few days its position has become 26 for that particular keyword but has not changed at all for other related phrases (with that one keyword included) Now the link for the one (keyword search) would be to the most relevant inner page.

The whole thing makes sense I am not complaining,
but has anyone else experienced such thing or is it my imagination ...

I suspect that one of the comments in the HR forum is correct. Google is tackling the issue of paid links (primarily for SEO purposes) and going at it pretty hard. If you've bought any links for SEO purposes, you may be seeing this.

Whatever they're doing, it hasn't affected me one iota personally...they keep sending me more and more traffic. (Now if they'd only send me more and more traffic that clicked on the ads, I'd be all set.)

I did buy some for SEO purposes but its definetelly not that, because the keywords I bought links for were all untouched

My ranking appears to be back to its "normal" position as of now so I guess it is what people refer to as the google dance (I just had not experienced this before)

Could be click tracking. Got placed well, but has not been getting the clicks like the ones ranked higher than you.

Google's SERP's are always changing because their Algo's are always changing. This is normal for Google.

It is all such a mystery. In mid-April one of my sites took a 75% hit in Google traffic losing top placement it had held for important keywords for a long, long time. I have no idea why and cannot fathom how to adjust to take care of it. It was especially disheartening because it's a gardening website and mid-April to mid-May were the hot months for getting clicks as well as affiliate sales.

Yea, well. The only thing that I could think of, is that your keyword is a little more competitive then you think. You may just want to put some more back links up with the anchor text that should help you get your ranking back... Is your site new? Old?

Hope I helped thanks..

For about the last month I have noticed a lot of consistency issues with the SERPs. I think Google is in the middle of a big push to make their algorithm smarter, as I've seen some of my sites that shouldn't have been ranking for certain key phrases fall to the positions they should have been. I have also noticed that a few of their updates have only lasted a few days before being pulled lately. Cheers.

I think mainly, sites are not getting docked as that would be completly insane to do on a sitewide (internet) level. ... But I think if your website is dropping out of rankings. Fix it by putting up back links that is just IMO.

Some of your backlinks could of fell away, some of your content recently added could be duplicate? Either of these would also be a sure fire way this could happen TO YOU.

I think there was a rumor that if your links are found under a header called "Sponsored Links" or "Sponsors", or something similar, they're not going to index you.

But why don't they shut down the link sellers?

What if I want to sponsor a site?
