In my logs the bots are visiting every couple of hours!

Is this a good sign?

How can I find out what they are doing?

It's not really a good sign or a bad sign. Spidering frequency doesn't effect SERSP.

I have to disagree with Stox once a month or so. How often they crawl your site doesn't affect the SERPS directly, but it can indirectly. Google doesn't crawl my site more than about once a week. I made a new post yesterday. I don't really get many referrals from search anyway, but if I did, I'd have to wait several days before my new content appears in the index, and hence the SERPS.

Of course, Stox is ultimately right, and I have a feeling if I did better in the SERPS for any real keyword, I'd probably get crawled more often.

Yeah the quicker a page is included in the index the quicker it's likely to show up in SERPS. But after it's included it doesn't matter how often google spider it.

The authority sites like CNN gets crawled by the GOOGLE very frequently so one expect a fast news from CNN.

Don't their visits create heavy load on your server resources? I was surprised to find out that there are still some hosts who disable prevent google bots from visiting sites on their servers.

I think this is because your website's content is updated very frequently, as I read somewhere.

It's a good sign in that you know that Google is actually looking at your site. So if you have not got indexed yet then you may get indexed very soon.
