Not that it could be a publicity stunt for Mahalo or anything like that.

This is actually "old news"...earlier this week, TechCrunch said the same thing.

The thing is that no one actually knows whether Squidoo is being penalized for spam, and everyone else is relying on the one thing that won't reveal the entire answer (i.e. rank checking).

Has Squidoo been contacted by big G about it?
Have they seen less SE traffic for various keywords/phrases?

This is just another in a long line of silly, unfounded SEO rumours, although if it is true it wouldn't really bother me personally.
