Google SOAP Search API Alternatives?

Google has deprecated their SOAP search API as of about 8 months ago, and they are no longer distributing API keys. Their alternative is an AJAX search API. I would like to access Google's search service through a server-side language (PHP) somehow. Are there any alternatives or ways to do this?

You probably meant Javascript, I'm assuming. Anyway, has anyone out there done this yet? It doesn't seem too fun to unscramble Google's Javascript to see how the request needs to be sent out and figure out how to format the AJAX request and response, etc. It's even less fun if you find out someone's already done it!
