That's kind of the point. The same is true of me and Republikin putting each other on our blog rolls. I didn't even realize I was on his when I added him to mine. I gave him a highly sought after spot in my blogroll because the man has earned my respect, on a deep level - which is a difficult thing to do, and much harder than just giving someone $50. If you don't watch out you might find yourself on my blogroll as well. Especially since we're both I-Follow'ers. Well, I was when I hosted through Blogger - I haven't figured out how to do it again in WordPress.
What I'm trying to point out here is all the people running around like chickens with their heads cut off talking about "Google is sending a hit squad to my home to kill my daughter because I have link exchanges" are full of it.
Spam is bad, m'kay?, but there are plenty of ways to earn links without resorting to spam. Me and Dave accidentally cross linking is proof. You and Adam both linking to each others sites is proof - both of your sites are essentially about the same thing: making the web a better place by sharing knowledge. It's natural you would both link to useful resources you don't cover yourself.
And that just goes to show that you don't automatically get a 1000 volt shock through your keyboard and mouse if you happen to cross link. It also implies that Google is better than we like to think at figuring out what's honest, natural, organic linking versus what's spam.
