What's the most popular of these two at the moment (particularly for shopping)? Web Position Gold rates Yahoo at number 1 with Google at number 2 but everyone seems to be sticking with Google right now

Any thoughts appreciated!

Well. it all depends with what kinda ads you r running.
for generially PPC search engine, google and overture are pretty much the same. depends on ur keywords.

but if you are tryin got get more business for your site, if you sell product, you may wanan check out admethod.com.

they are pretty new, i read about it today. but they seems having a pretty good idea on showing direct sale lead.

First off...get rid of WPG2. You don't need it. If you do use it, don't use the submission part of it just the optimization part. Google probably still has the better search with Yahoo providing the best user experience by having a portal site.

Well, first off, you've got the relative strengths of the databases behind each of these sites; Google probably the leader but as Yahoo buys up the smaller search sites it's getting better all the time; much of a muchness between the two

Then there's the added muscle on each of their respective paid options; Google was always leading the way here with Google Sponsored Listings and Google Adwords but look at Yahoo now offering Overture Site Match and Yahoo Precision Match within it's rankings; effectively have bought/taken over Inktomi (Express Inclusion), Altavista(SearchSubmit etc.) and Overture

so they're pretty much equal giants of web search at the moment

I wonder who will win long-term

or is this town big enough for the both of them

paradoxically, OFFLINE advertising of their own brands may actually establish greater matket supremacy

dommyb, either are top engines so not to worry although I suppose ComScore, MediaMatrix, Netratings etc. all recognise Google as the leading engine out there

Google is the most popular engine. So pound for pound, more people will see your ads if you advertise on Google.
But then, will they click on them more just because there's more people. Yes, but will your conversion rates improve, probably not.

Google is most likely the best option at present because you'll (theoretically) get a higher volume of traffic with the same conversion ratio.

If you are a user, then I would recommend Yahoo for shopping. While Google is the better search engine right now, Yahoo has extensive ties in the online shopping sector with hundreds of partners through their Yahoo Shopping network.

For pure research and day-to-day searching, I would use Google.

I believe I had heard a while ago that the top listings on Yahoo were bought, so I switched to Google right away! I want natural results from my searches, not from the highest bidder.

I am switching everyone I talk to (when I talk about searching) to Google because of this.

Just my 2 cents.

Vaseo,

I am a bit of a cynic so I would say that it is probably impossible to find high-value searches that are completely free from behind-the-scenes commercial influence. Although popular sentiment may hold that certain search engines "don't sell keyword positioning," the one thing I have learned in life is that everything is negotiable. Everything.

A little off the topic, but I hope you'll indulge me.

I would vote for Google. Everyone I know uses google. Yahoo has good mail features, but google is a better search engine. Does Yahoo even have its own category on this site? NO. LOL. Go with google

I use both and depends a lot on what I am searching for.

For shopping I start off with Google, if I can't find what I want at Google always find it at Yahoo....

Are you talking about PPC or search engine results?

If your talking about choosing one of the search engines to optimise the onpage elements to then personally I would choose Yahoo because Yahoo pays more attention to onpage elements than google, Google puts more enthasis on Links. So If you optimise the onpage to Yahoo and Off page for google then you have the highest chance of getting high in both.

Otherwise I'd imagine their would be a slight difference with the search engines to what kind of person searches, Yahoo is often set to people home page so people who are not very compter savvy tend to stay with it for simplicity, and people who are more savvy often change over to google, not sure how much this would alter their spending habit though.
