I have noticed when I have clicked a paid link in search engine like adwords, I'll be directed to a link such as this: www.domain.com/?=google

I would imagine this is some sort of way to track campaigns. What is the logic behind how this works. If I did something like this would the browser direct them to my main index page despite the additional characters? And, I would imagine this unique link would somehow show up in my stats?

Your absolutely right. The extended url ?=ect. is being used for tracking purposes. The log files will record that so the site owner can tell how many times a specific ad was clicked on.

The logic behind how this works: if you went to a page blah.htm?=google or blah.htm?=overture, the user would see the same page, blah.htm. But the stats program would know the difference and therefore would generate a report of how many times a user entered from ?=whatever. This way ads can be modified for better ROI.
