do you think it works?

yes getting your website linked from other sites will definetely get you better pagerank.
BTW thats the way pagerank works.

It does to a point, exspecaily when you have a very low PR however when you start getting higher you have to be careful how much page rank you are exchanging it is possible for you to lose Page rank if you make a bad exchange. If you link from your PR4 link page their homepage and they link back from thier PR0 link page you would be a lot bettter off linking to your own homepage, or just not linking out at all.

Always look at the PR and the number of outgoing links on someone links page to figure out if it is a worthwhile swap, plus if the pages is caled links.html, sometime google won' let it pass PR.

What if you have pr0 what would you do? Nobody wants to link with you and you'll be stucked at PR0

Dont worry.
You can try getting listed in web directories (like dmoz etc.)
Or request other webmasters. I have had good experiences with other webmasters. Tell them that the site is new and hasn't got PR as yet.
If your PR is due to penalty than I dont think any webmaster would liink to you.

Link exchange is tricky business.

One of the worst problem is the ranking system, in one of the articles I read, a PR4 page can range between 915 to 4948 points. A low end PR4 is not a lot better than a high end PR3.

The iternative nature of search engine calculation also makes the value of an outbound link very difficult to determine, the organisation of pages linked within a site makes a big difference. Just to make life even more fun the inbound links affects the PR distribution as well.

Link exchange works but a person might loose sleep over it.

IMHO,it's better to analyse PR throuth it's calculating formula.
do a deep research in it,and you'll learn a lot!

Link exchange is good for bringing in extra and targetted traffic. But that may also means that your readers may wander off to the other side.

I would be more interested in linking to someone whose site is in DMOZ than to one which is not (no matter what the PR). A site in DMOZ in worth very much more and will get indexed by Google. You don't get to be in Google's directory if you're not in DMOZ.

However, just trying to do the linking stuff for a higher PR can be time consuming, and sometimes costly. I would rather concentrate my effort in building a truly quality site, then use that site to link to my other sites. In that way, I will get quality traffic and yet not worry about them "leaving" my sites for they are always "under the same umbrella".

Once, I received an invitation from a new site to do a reciprocal linking and the webmaster worked very hard. His site went from 0 to 6. Then, lured by greed, he changed his homepage and stuffed in a lot of affiliate stuff and now his ranking is 0. Even his directory is 0.
