They always look so amateur to me, but I wondered if there's any virtue in webrings as a manner of getting reciprocal links. I now have a client who's requesting to include her site in one.

What are everybody's thoughts on webrings?

Thanks,
Tracey

They look amateurish to me, too... very "geocities"... and do you ever click on them? ever?

On the other hand, if the client wants it, I'd say give it to her... that's what it's all about, no? It's not like it will drag down her PR or rankings...

I think I clicked on one once 9 years ago. They make me crabby. I told her that if she wanted to do it, that it can't hurt. thanks for the input!

No I have never been involved with webrings myself...

If you do happen to click on them, some of the people are long gone, don't keep up with their websites, so you receive errors...

An SEO professional suggested to me to become a part of a webring. Tried it for a year and got NO work or action from it. Waste of time and I hated the look of their banner on my home page. Glad to see the end of that.

Functionally, a webring is just a type of link exchange, the real advantage is that the sites are associated in their specific specialisation, together they have a greater presence independent of search engines.

There is also the benefit human interaction with other members of the ring that a search engines can not provide.

Theoretically, that's true. But while the content of the sites in a webring is determined by the particular theme of the ring, the quality of the sites is not generally moderated or controlled. Consequently, in practice, they tend to consist of more wheat than chaff.

If by "a greater presence independent of search engines" you mean greater visibility, I really doubt that is true, unless large numbers of people are clicking on those "next site" links which as far as I know is not the case. Thus, for the most part, belonging to that web ring basically one more graphic to load - I really doubt it will bring you any more traffic over time and I think it makes a site look amateurish.

I complete agree with your arguement.

A professional web site don't tend to be part of a webring, it does not do credit to the image.

A professional web site don't generally have an interest in associating with other brands.

What they love is to sit on the top of the Google ranking list saying 'me me me me me me me'.

The webring is for the poor, the rich have the means to do a lot better.

The big names have branches on the high street (or just about everyone know of the brand), this is true search engine independence.

I agree the webring probably won't bring much traffic compared to other means of marketing, the benefit is mainly a matter of networking. Working together, there is strength in numbers. Web presence is desired, people help you get there.

I'm not trying to argue against networking at all - posting in forums like this one is one form of networking and I have found several valuable partners and associates through this medium. My argument would be that even in terms of networking webrings aren't a particularly good way of doing that - it's basically just a network of unmoderated links, as I said, so I'd be surprised if most members of a ring have any contact with one another.

Do you not think that it is time that webmasters had a little more control over the ranking and placement of their product? Maybe we need a webmaster contolled search engine or directory to compete with the best of what's available! Perhaps a guild of webmasters webring! But then maybe Santa Claus really does exist!
