The Other Search Engines

Hi, I am a total novice at this and I have just created a website for the company I work for. I know I will have to register with search engines, but that is the total extent of my knowledge!

What do I actually do to register? Do people usually do this direct with the search engines? I really have no idea what happens with this, and how you get a good listing with a search engine. How do I have to edit the pages to get search terms to be found? What is a meta tag and how does it relate to search engines (if at all?!)

Any advice gratefully received!

SEO is a whole industry that is dedicated to doing exactly what you want so there is no real easy simple answer. However , there are some things you can do to get started.

Submit to DMOZ . this is really important since most of the really big search engines get results from their index.
Depending on the catagory you submit to it might take a while to be added so just be patient.

You also can go to the individual search engines sites to either "suggest url" or many have pay submission options.

You also mentioned Meta tags, though it is still good to add them, they have almost no relevance to googles search results (or most other search engines)
I hope this is a helpfull start for you, its by no means the full extent to what you can do to promote your site.

You need to get links from other sites pointing to your site...

This way Google will be able to find and index your site and the more links the better the pagerank you will get.

Also submit your site to Google @ www.google.com/addurl

best thing to do is look and read through some of the other topics in this forum, the misc site promo forum, and the google forum.

there's a huge wealth of info. on how to promote your site.

tips + tricks are hidden, there's enough info. to keep you reading for days!!

learn SEO if you can as well as submitting. links are important, the more you have, the more you'll be picked up by engines without having to submit (a much better way of getting up the engines)
