after applying for search keywords which has no editor and 8 sites listed

i get this

Quote:
Dear Kevin Muldoon,

Thank you for your interest in becoming an Open Directory Project editor.
After careful review, we have decided not to approve your application at
this time. The most common reasons a reviewer will deny a new application
include, but are not limited to,

* Incomplete application. Insufficient information has been provided in some
fields including reason, affiliation and/or Sample URLs.
* Improper spelling and grammar.
* Sample URLs are inappropriate for the category which one has applied to
edit. They may be too broad, too narrow, completely out of scope, poor
quality, or in a language inappropriate for the category. All non-English
sites are listed in the World category. Applications for World categories
that include sites only in English will be denied. Likewise, applications
for World categories that include sample URLs in languages other than the one
appropriate for the applied category will be denied.
* Not properly disclosing affiliations with websites that are, or have the
potential of being, listed in the category.
* Titles and descriptions of sample URLs (and other information provided)
were subjective and promotional rather than unbiased and objective. ODP
editors do not rank or write website reviews. ODP editors provide objective
and unbiased descriptions of websites and their content.
* Self-Promotion. Application which leads us to believe that the candidate is
interested primarily in promoting his/her own sites or those with which the
applicant is affiliated. The ODP is not a marketing tool, and should not be
used to circumvent the site submission process. If this is an applicant's
motivation for joining, then we ask him/her not to apply. Editors found to be
inappropriately promoting their own site will be promptly removed.

Due to the large number of applications we get every day, we are unable to
provide personal responses to every application or to respond to inquiries
about why you were rejected. If a reviewer chose to provide additional
comments to you, they will be given in the "Reviewer Comments" section below.

Your willingness to volunteer is greatly appreciated and perhaps we will be
able to utilize your talent in the future.

Regards,
The Open Directory Project

Reviewer Comments:

I do not have any way of knowing why you were rejected. One thing I did not do at DMOZ was process new editors requests. Do know that more or rejected than are accepted. I have been told about 5 or rejected for each one accepted.

I cannot tell you what the status is, as my name of X dmoz tells it all. I am no longer an editor. Resigned when AOL wanted $7,000.00 for a key word, for what I was doing for free. That got me to thinking.

You didn't say what category you submitted to however I would like to make a couple of suggestions.

Their were almost one million unreviewed sites, especially in the Travel Category. Therefore I would suggest you resubmit your site to the shopping category since people can purchase online.

I would also suggest you add some text to your page so an editor will know what you are doing. For example if the cards can be sent FREE, put that in your first paragraph. While most editors do a good job of reviewing a site, some are lazy and will look at the first paragraph and quit at that point.

In DMOZ you are allowing two sites. One in the category, such as shopping and one in the location where your office is located, which is the Regional cats.

The nice thing about DMOZ: The search engines will pick your page up faster than if you submit to them, especially Google. Many will rank your page based on the content, not where it is place in DMOZ.

Good luck

If this is an editor that personally rejects the application, why can't they at least have a check mark or some way to tell the applicant why they were rejected?

There is a place for the editor comments.

I know there are lots of applications, but how can you be expected to do better when you really don't know what you did wrong?

It's food for thought.

Dave

Dave, I was not one that processed applications and I agree with you however the individuals that processed the applications received so much hate mail after they were rejected, they decided not to answer any request, except with a form letter.

They are looking for editors that will follow instructions.

Misspelled words, failure to answer all questions, sites that doesn't belong in the category you are requesting editors permissions for, grammar.

For example: Something like the following is sure to cause you to be rejected. (lower case i)

i want to be an editor because i know a lot about this...

One of the guide lines they have recently established for approvals...they want short, to the point descriptions...not the 25 or 50 words they give you in the sample request.

Assuming you were submitting webmaster-talk.com to them as a sample site the following type of submission would probably be accepted as excellent.

Title: Webmaster-Talk Forums (Notice the topic all starts with upper case)
Description: Webmaster discussion forums covering many topics.
(Notice the Description uses normal spelling format with lower case)

What would not be accepted:

Title: Webmaster-Talk Forums Where You Can Discuss Search Engines (They want company name only)
Description: Webmaster-Talk Forums with discussion of Search Engins (Repeat of the title, misspelled word, Upper case in description.

Look at what you submitted, and try again but wait for about 30 days before you do.

Webmaster-Talk is already listed with the description you listed. It is the same title I submitted but they did modify my description a little.

Webmaster-Talk Forums - Webmaster discussion forums covering many topics
