My Struggle With Autosubmitters

I'll tell you now that I had to learn this the hard way, as many web designers do. Autosubmitters, while a useful tool, just don't get the job done. You hear ads for software or services that will submit your site to "1 million websites" for a fee; now that's just a bunch of talk. When it comes down to it, there are three reasons why autosubmitters are, for the most part, useless:

1) They are considered SPAMMING by some search engines, which will eventually blacklist your website.
2) They usually submit your site to a large number of FFA (free for all) link lists, which will either place you on a mailing list or send you a email ad most of the time. These lists are not ever viewed by visitors either.
3) They cannot be as category specific as one might hope. An autosubmitter usually will submit your site to a general category if one must be selected. In turn, you lose potential visitors.
4) They can ruin your chances to resubmit correctly. In my past, I have been unable to update or resubmit a submission due to the fact that my site is already indexed correctly.
5) They're down right not effective.
and the list goes on...

If you are needing to submit a site to a few general, non-specific, search engines, an autosubmitter might be acceptable. Even then, however, you need to be careful. My advice to you is to do it by hand. I know it may take a while, but there is no need to submit a website to thousands of indexes by hand. Submit to the larger engines and indexes, then promote in other ways. These include link exchanges, awards, newsletters, and even word of mouth. I'll address these techniques another time. But for now, please heed my warning: "Beware of autosubmitters!"

By submitting your site to Yahoo, ODP and Inktomi, you are getting into almost all the search engines out there anyway. There is no real need to use an auto submitter.

great post - beware of these companies who submit your site to 80,000 directories

what they mean is they use software to add your name to unrelated free for all lists and topsites which will get you banned quicker than a man with a bee in his pants!!

as far as awards - the most famous is golden web award and boy have they awarded that to some ugly sites - complete scam!!

autosubmitters that you pay for over the internet are no good. they will more than likely get you blacklisted sooner or later.

the best way to go about things is to manually submit, or don't submit at all. build links, and get spidered.

if you must submit, then use something like WebPosition. something honed by profressionals. its great software, and it works.

submit to directories, as suggested, especially Dmoz, this is arguably the most important.

if you get into yahoo as well, so much the better. optimsise, get into directories, and get links through quality content, you can't go wrong from there.

if you do that, and you do it well, traffic will come. the internet is a game, you must have tactics, you must have plans. if you run about like a headless chicken and take random shots, you'll get killed. if you stay in the background making plans, and then catapault yourself into the fray, you'll take over and conquer all in your path with lightening speed.

in just a few months you can go from being a non-existence to being a big site. its easy if you follow the rules. get the right keywords, the right links, the right content, and you're away.

if you autosubmit and get blacklisted, no one cares how good your content is, they won't see it.
