Some people swear by article marketing and others can't seem to get it to work for them. Personally, I think it's a combination of your niche, the content of your article, timing, and pure luck. If you write a lot of articles and make a name for yourself, then people might tend to pick up your articles simply because they "know" who you are.
So while articles CAN bring more traffic directly from the directories, I think the potential links are the real benefit. More links, more Google love. More links, more likely you will show up in the search engines more often and therefore have a better chance of someone following a link to your site and clicking on Adsense or buying from you.
While article marketing certainly has its place, it should not be your only link-building method ... regardless of how successful it might be for you. Don't put all your eggs in one basket and use several different methods for getting links.
