IE3 is a legal (coming from stone age) browser, which was included in windows 95 rev. B, I believe.

Now, don't trust the user agent string from your logs. This can be spoofed to anything. It don't say nothing.

I won't trust the user agent string. I find it hard to believe a real person is visiting my site, especially from Europe, using Fred Flinstone's browser.

I won't trust it, but, in this case, I don't know what I can do about it. Now maybe someone is using 3.0B as a text only browser on a new machine, but I think it is more likely it resides on a modified machine dedicated to "crawling" the web OR someone is using an old machine on the net and they have no idea it is being used by bots or hackers.

Any number of things could be at work here. As we've seen, it means somebody is using Internet Explorer, which is a very bad, very dangerous thing. If it's at all possible to stop this behavior, we should be concerned with finding out how. I don't see much evidence a bot is involved, but if one were, that would be far less harmful than a human using IE.
