Does anyone know if search engines are more likely to index directories closer to the top? In other words, would a search engine be more likely to list a resource if the path were:

root/screwdriver/myscrewdriver.html

rather than:

root/tools/screwdrivers/electric/phillips/myscrewdriver.html

or does it matter?

Thanks all!

Emory

Hey Emory,

Welcome to Webmaster-Talk and thanks for joining our affiliate program

I don't know the answer to your question for all search engines, but as for Google, in my opinion, I don't think it matters. However the way you name your directories is of importance.

certain search engines (like google and inktomi) will crawl very deep and probably every page on your site

other ones will just nidex the home page

there is tons of info about this sort of thing at http://www.searchengineworld.com

you should drop by there

The initial crawls of search engines do not go very deep. However most larger search engines will crawl the entire site eventually. This can take some time though.

If you are concerned about a section not getting crawled, then submit an idex page that is deeper in the site.

I think that no one knows the answer for that.

I've seen several answers for your question.

In my opinion, what matters is the linking structure and not the directory

structure. For instance, you could link from the home page to a very deep file

as if it was on the root directory.

I appreciate the response, but I posted this question about 5 years ago when I was trying to decide how to structure my site's urls. I've since learned that urls going several directories deep are no more or less likely to be indexed than shorter ones
