A RSS feed is a XML node tree with the structure in a format that conforms to the RSS specification.
As to why it's considered "important" I have no idea, I consider it useful when you want to make your content available for others to replicate (or steal).
For some sites it would actually be a negative, because people don't actually HAVE to visit the site to read the information, they can simply get it directly. Bit of a major problem if you rely on advertising clicks for a "revenue stream". No visitors = No clicks.
