Here are a few of the top places to submit your site and also the Add URL links...Keep in mind most search engines take a long time to finally be listed, and as well, as listing does not mean good ranking (that is a whole new ball game)...

Inktomi results are displayed in AOL, MSN, iWon and HotBot , but many times as secondary results after the Open Direcotry Results. So, a listing in DMOZ is very important.

Find an appropriate category and submit to it. Expensive. But you can try the free method. A google listing will be seen in Yahoo's web pages results...

When you submit to the open directory always submit to a category that has an editor.
Scroll to the bottom of the directory page , if you see "this category need an editor" dont submit in this directory, as you will wait forever for a listing.
Always search out related (primary keyphrase) directories within dmoz to submit your site to that has an editor or you will be wasting your time.

What about Zeal directory I saw Webmaster-Talk Listed there is it improve somehow link popularity or rather not because they don't provide direct linkback to your site but through the script?
I even became zealot myself some weeks ago and I really like thier conception of directory managment more than DMOZ...
The only thing I not like in them is that there is some commercial categories in whitch you could not suggest any link(you can suggest but it rather not be placed there)

Getting your site an optimum listing in the Open Directory (http://www.dmoz.org) is vitally important as far as search engine positioning is concerned.

AOL, Netscape & Lycos all take their results from the Open Directory.

Google gives a lot of importance to sites being listed in the Open Directory. In addition to this, getting registered by the Open Directory will also help you improve the link popularity of your site

Before you submit your site, go through your entire site and ensure that there are no missing graphics, no links leading to empty or non-existent pages and no "Under construction" symbols.

Also, check for typos and grammatical errors. Furthermore, your site must provide good content.

If your site simply contains links to various affiliate programs, you will find it difficult to get through.

The Open Directory does not mind sites containing links to affiliate programs, as long as you provide proper content.

The ODP is important, however dont hold your breath to get listed, what is far more important is the body text, inbound and outbound links, from and to related sites, content on your page, forget the link pop you may get from this directory as its easier to gain popularity from related sites via recipricol links. Build your links ,this is the most important part of marketing your site. The online marketing sites out there will die a death in the next few years. The net will eventually use link pop as the ultimate ranking criteria.
