Hi all,

Just wanted to tell you about our old domain and search engines.

When I did the meta tags in about 1999 I listed the key word list with no space in between the comma and the next word.

Unbelievably, the site was number one quite a bit and never seemed to be less than number 20. This was with the keyword "stamps".

It was on all the major search engines, like Alta Vista, Lycos, Excite, and the others.

I am not sure since re-doing the meta tags just recently what we will end up at. I used the meta tag generator at bCentral.

It seems like every tag generator is different so for someone like me I get confused easily. LOL

Of course, manually submitting to search engines (was) fairly easy but now I can't seem to find on some where to submit. Or I only see "pay" for a listing. I don't mind manually submitting and actually prefer it. Then I have a check list of where I submitted. I have tried some of those submit free to search engines but they open up 20 windows and you can't tell if it worked. Or many are "page cannot be displayed" or "link is outdated".

Regards,

Chuck

Hi Chuck,

Meta keywords are mostly useless. They are still valuable in small and unheard of engines, but the big guys don't use them. The reason each meta tag generator has different results is because there is no set standard. You can use commas/no space, commas/space or just space and it has the same effects.

There are very few search engines out there worth submitting to anymore. You are correct that most of the search engines are not paid submissions.

Google: don't bother submitting. make sure you are in ODP

ODP: Free to submit. It is a directory so be sure you don't use hype. Use company name as title and a true and analytic description of what the site is about.

Yahoo: Commercial sites pay $299, period, end of discussion. I hate it, but they do need to pay their bills too, so I understand.

Inktomi: You have to pay for them also. If you don't, you will eventually be found. This can take a matter of days or months. You just never know.

AllTheWeb: This is free and will get you into Lycos and Alltheweb.

That is about all the good ones left. Don't worry to much about the others.
