Is it worth bothering with non-google search engines?

Google is pretty much on top right now, and also a hard one to beat. But personally, just relying on one SE is a bit lazy and risky. You really can't tell what's gonna happen in the future you know. Its still best if you make efforts on trying to get traffic from other SE, no matter how little percentage it may contribute to your traffic. Little is still better than nothing, right? =)

Yeah I think it's worth bothering with non-google search engines as well. I for one, I don't just use google when I do research; I also use yahoo, msn and etc., and what I've noticed was that the search results weren't the same, meaning your site can appear on the first pages in google but not with yahoo and others.

I think it's not worth it. Google still generates the best traffic and you should focus your time and energy on that search engine. You can only get minimal traffic from other SEs.

It is no doubt that we should optimize our sites for google first. But we should not just ignore search engines since we will never know when google will have a big change in their algorithm that might drop your serp rankings to nowhere.

Sometimes depending upon your niche you may get a less traffic from other search engines but may be some good conversion than what you are getting through google but it does depend upon niche..

I would only bother with high ranking search engines for traffic.

I think it is just fair to give attention to other major search engines because somehow they can help you out with your marketing. Yahoo and Bing are not really far behind Google so if you can rank better at the two then it will definitely help you out.

I think is realy hard be in top of most popular SE (Google, msn, yahoo, yandex) should choose one from all SE, you must have great money that be in top in all SE.

Well traffic coming from other search engines might not be a lot but at least when combined together in longer term period, they still can make a difference.

I agree 100% Chris, some days I get more traffic from StumbleUpon or Twitter than from search engines. But looking at only search engine traffic only, my site yields about 65% from Google, the other 35% comes from other search engines including Yahoo, Bing and AOL (didn't even know AOL still existed! LOL) and I would have to say, even if it were only 10% I would want that 10% of traffic.

It is always good to rank well in all major SEs. Currently your site ranks well in google. If you try to optimize for other SEs, it might affect your rankings in google. It is up to you to take this risk or not.

There's no harm in optimizing for other SE. Not all people are using only google, although it is popular but don't limit your decision to one SE only after all, changes exist every second.

Or better still - forget submitting to any SE's and go get a rep on a decent other site - like erm webmaster-talk

I believe that's what they call networking and as ChrisHirst said - "all your eggs in one basket" hmm - doesn't take that much of a big shake to turn all that into a runny old mess that makes things very complicated to recover from, now does it?

I think Google should be given the priority while considering any SEO or Internet Marketing related jobs.

So real users get low priority then?

Every search engine contributes. It doesn't matter how big or small is that. People from small engines may give you affiliates sale or the may click on your ads. So everyone is equal.

I dont think that good ranking on one search engine will improve your ranking on another search engine.

However I have noticed what appear to be correlations between rankings on some search engines, in particular serp for my keywords on AOL and Ardvaark seem to track movement in serp for those keywords on Google. This may just be coincidental, but if my position in Google moves up it does the same on AOL and Ardvaark and likewise if the position on Google goes down. This coupled with the fact that the position on AOL, Ardvaark and Google are normally within 3 or 4 places of each other does seem to suggest a connection between these search engines.

With regards Bing and Yahoo I show for keywords on Bing that dont show on any other search engines and dont show for keywords that do appear on other search engines, and likewise for Yahoo.

Well it would!!

Given that BOTH of these use the results FROM Google to show in their search!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
