I know some if you will say that I just need to create good content that others will want to link to and therefore do this, but that is not going to work here. Ask yourself how often you link to other websites as you are browsing because of good content.

link exchanges are far from getting over, but it should be done carefully for getting a lot of link exchanges from irrelevant sites may affect your SERP negatively. Getting links from authority sites are far more better.
Here are the most usual ways on how to get links.
1. get links from .edu sites, you can try to email their webmasters and ask politely if they can add your site to their libraries or online references. This can be done if you have a quality content or site that might compliment their webpages.
2. Email other bloggers and ask if you can write a guest post on their blog, in exchange for your entries, you should be able to put your link inside the article or blog entry that you have created. I highly recommend this rather than posting nonsense or spam comments on blogs.
3. Make a press release on PRweb and other free press release sites, these are another good source of free links, also submit articles on ezine and wait for it to go live. after your article goes live on ezine you can now submit it to other article directories, and put the URL of your article on ezine and also the site you are optimizing on the author's box.\
4.RSS feeds, Directories and some social bookmarking sites are do follow, you can submit your site and get free links.
there are lot more ways to get links aside from the ones I have indicated, and it's all up to you how you can find a good resource to place those links of yours.
