i think yahoo was the 1st proper search engine according to my knowledge.

Yahoo! started as a directory it wasn't until mid 2000 that Yahoo! had a search engine and even that was powered by Googles index.

It's Archie derive from the word archive. That's all I know,(correct me if I'm wrong, thanks)

Yes the first internet search engine, Archie, Jughead, etc.
It my understanings that Gopher was the first and inspired the other FTP search engies.

Gopher is a TCP/IP protocol (Port 70) and was a predecessor of the WWW.

Oh the glory days of trying to get listed in the old Yahoo! directory without paying
