Hi -

I've got a site which covers a few areas of products so as well as the generic domain name (i.e. 'www.PRODUCTsite.com'), I've also got a few others that are specific to the various areas of products covered in the sections of the site (i.e. 'www.GREENproducts.com, www.BLUEproducts.com, www.REDproducts.com, etc).

Question is, should I just point all these domains at the one, main site, or should I set these up separately elsewhere with a product-specific homepage which then has links back to the generic site?

I don't really want to be doing it for the 'linking' aspect, just presenting the search engines with the best possible combination of relative domain with relative content.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

DT.

If you point all the domains at the one site, the search engines will simply make a choice of which domain to use as the main. The problem with this method is repeat content which most search engines can detect easily.

I would advise the later splitting the main site into product focused smaller sites. I would also link them together when it is in the interest of the surfer to do so. Someone looking at a blue widget may be interested to know they are also available in green.

The main thing to avoid is repeat content. What are you going to do with the original site?

Ah - that sounds cool.

The content certainly wont be repeated as I have plenty to say on each widget and they are all related but don't overlap so the temptation to repeat content wont be there. They are currently fairly well targetted parts of the site, even now, so gathering them under their relative domain name just seems the natural way to go.

This also points to the eventual aim where the current site that covers all widgets will be a central resource leading not only to separate products but also to international versions of the site selling the widgets abroad.

Thanks for the help James!

Yep that’s the way to go.

I look forward to the day I can full fill all my widget needs from one place, wherever in the world I may be (dam widget addiction).
