Or you should try Backlink Builder if this backlink tool you are talking about- It links to your website with the keyword (keyphrase) that you are trying to optimize for.

Nowadays you can verify your domain through Google, Yahoo and Bing webmaster tools panels and then can receive updated reports of your links. Checking out the links stats of your competitors may not produce anything useful because they are only parts of their successful SEO procedures.

If you want a tool that can shows backlinks of your website or other sites for you, the best choices are Google webmaster tools and Yahoo explorer. Also there is a software called seoelite and it can do it for you too but i myself have not tried it yet.

Yahoo explorer is free. And most of the backlink tool today are free to use but if you need a genuine key, then you need to buy the software.
