Hi,
MSN lists a link to an old page on my site that now refreshes to the new page. I changed the link about 6 months ago. There doesn't seem to be any way outside of paying the Looksmart fee to correct the link in their results. Anyone know how I can get MSN or Looksmart to correct it? Should I break the link?
Thoughts appreciated.
Emory

Hi Emory7,

I don't know if you fixed the problem since your post. To allow Msn/Looksmart to switch to the new page, I would rather recommend the use of a .htaccess file saying "the url's page has changed to a new one".

To do so, insert a .htaccess file in the directory where the former page was. In the Htaccess, insert :

RedirectPermanent /path/to/your/formerpage.html http://urlofyourwebsite.com/newpage.html

[Note] This must be entered at the same line in your .htaccess.

By doing this, all spiders should spider the new page instead of the former page.

I Hope that helps.

Hi Gautier!

Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't gotten it to work yet (500 Server Error). However, once I do, this will solve a lot of problems that I caused when I foolishly moved a resource that had lots of sites pointing to it.

I also discovered that the way to get into Looksmart if you have a non-commercial site is via Zeal.com. Zeal states that "additions to Zeal appear on partner sites of LookSmart, including Microsoft's MSN, AltaVista, Excite, CNN.com, and hundreds of ISPs." After numerous attempts today, I managed to pass the quiz to become a "Zealot."

Thanks again,

Emory
