Not so sure. when these topics are splintered off it does seem to reduce the amount of traffic and comment coming through the forum in question e.g. the PPC forum that we currently have seems to be getting very little traffic. I know the Google forum will be popular but maybe the other topics in the main Search Engine forum will suffer in terms of lower incoming traffic as a result?

I suppose it could be a good thing. An area to focus on the Google issues alone but just thought I'd put forward another perspective. Fair to say, Google forum not in danger of being 'forgotten' in way that PPC forum seems to be a little bit.

I don't really think it's necessary. As it is, the forums aren't very popular.
