Hi Drachewyn, Lippy, Praveen & Fellow Forumies

Oops...! posted my first message in the wrong Forum previously.

Can anyone help me with Meta Tags...?

I recently submitted my Site through Lycos.

My problem is that I can search my site only with my Site name but not with the entries in both my "Description" Tag and "Keywords" Tag.

Just to give you an idea what I am talk about :

<TITLE>Gerard Rima Website. Family. Travel, Vacations, Holidays, Romance, Scuba, Sailing, Friends.</TITLE>
<META NAME="Description" CONTENT="Gerard Rima Website. Vacations, Holidays, Family, Friends. Everyting for the Rima Family.">
<META NAME="Keywords" CONTENT="Mauritius, Gerard, Rima, Martine, Rima, Jacqueline, Nicholas, Australia, Melbourne, Relatives, Isle de France, Barbet, Collard, Desveaux, Vitry, Indian Ocean">
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">

When I type the name "Gerard Rima" in search , I can access my site.
But when I type "Mauritius" for example . I cannot see my site among the listing under Mauritius.

Questions:-

1. Should the "Keywords" tag be before the "Description" Tag or it does not matter..?

2. If I do any modification to my Meta Tags .Will this be updated immediately by the search Engines or do I need to resubmit to lycos once the changes are completed.

3. My Website Name is "Gerard's Homepage" . Should I associate all the other words in my Meta tags with "Gerard's" Example : Gerard Mauritius , Gerard Australia , etc....

I have been following every tutorials regarding Meta Tags that I can get my hands on, but it is still not clear..

Can someone tell me what's the best way of doing this...

I hope all this makes sense...! Because I have no idea..!

Your meta tags are fine as they are now

A : this does not matter, as long as it is there. it is perfectly fine

just put this line on the top
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">

cos the browser will know which charset ur page is in.. or u can remove it also. this is not much of a importance

A: it depends on the time taken by the search engines to revisit your site, normally they revisit every 3 weeks or so(again depends on engines to engines).

But make it a point to submit your site once every 3-4 months or so to the major search engines.
and also make sure that your "first" page contents is changed often.
I have seen sites where it does not change at all and remains static, eventually the search engine might think it is a unchanged page so will not care to index again.

A: no, you need not do it. too many tags with the same text will not make any difference. cos it has already been indexed once. so it will be left. it will only increase the page size. if u r planning to have lots of keywords in ur page.

Go to www.w3schools.com or www.webmonkey.com
for a good tut and a nice intro on this stuff. I recommend w3schools. it is good and easy to learn also.

A: thats because this site is not the only one with mauritius on it. there are lots of them and many would have been there for a long time. so you got to wait. or use some search engine optimisation stuff (personally, i am not good at it i think

).

but dont worry, time will take its effect on this.

also i searched for your site in lycos with the word "Gerard Rima Website" and i got your site so that means your site has been indexed by lycos.

I think that you've answered all of my questions in one single swoop...!

I'll take your advise and see how I go in the weeks/Months to come..

I have some queries regarding some of the editing Tools on this forum... but I'll leave this for later...

When you say to change the page contents often.. Do you mean the Meta Tag contents ....?

You also mentioned to resubmit my site every 3-4 months... Will lycos charge me for resubmitting as I have already paid for 1 Year...?

I am still trying to understand the fundamentals of Search Engines..

If I change my meta tag contents on a regular basis...Will all the previous meta tags contents be deleted when the search engines revisit my site....?

if u c my site, my "Top New Resources" section is updated once or twice every 2 weeks.
through this my "content" of the first page is not static, it is changing. get it.

A: for this you have to look into the terms and conditions of the paid submission.

did u pay lycos or did u use any other submission service??

since you have paid for 1 year, i think you can submit again after 3-4 months. in any case check with the person/site/company involved.
i submitted my site for free there. so there is no restriction as such.. but if u submit it very often, say once in 3 weeks or so.. then you might be termed as spamming. and you site will be removed. so it is safe to submit it in once every 3-4 months.

A: Dont change your meta tags completely. Leave those ones which you feel are essential for the site and which you think are good and reflects your site.
normally ppl do not change meta tags . cos they want the meta tags to be associated with the site. so they will not make much of a change.

if u change it completely then there is a chance that the previous ones will be discarded..

if u want to change it, change them over a period of time and gradually..
