I am new to this game and have read different things about how often to submit URL to search engines. One says submit every 7 days at most, and another source said submit every day! One sayd if you submit too often, you will be banned from submission in future.

What is the right thing to do?

Many thanks!

Never!

You should submit once only to directories and the SEs will find your site from the links there.

I submitted an unlinked page to MSN, Yahoo and Google about 8 weeks ago. Slurp visited once, still waiting for the googlebot and msnbot to put in an appearance.

Well, my opinion: a serious directory or search engine won't require second indexing. No offece, I run 2 directories and I just add sites that are in the subject, afterwards I just leave them. If I need to see the links I just check them and from time to time delete URLs that lead to nowhere. From a webmaster POV .. I just don't have the nerves and time to resubmit my site to the thousands of search engines. After all Google is the main one used. I also care for Yahoo, MSN and Altavista, plus some more big names. I take into account a smaller one if it's a good free one. If I have to spend more than 1 minute to index my page I just leave.

On a second note: make sure your page has text, serious content, try few link exchanges with good sites in your subject, put a link in the signature and post smart stuff on the forums you post in and just update the site frequently and improve all day. In time all this SEO stuff is reduced to a simple equation: GOOD CONTENT SITE = GOOD TRAFFIC.

Although google did update their webmaster info recently and it still says to submit your url once if your site is new. Aside from this, mainly just try to get links so spiders can find you.

And pers, that is one of the best directory list although I may have bad luck, but my acceptance rate is pretty low

I appreciate everyone's help.. Now please bear with me as I expose the degree of my ignorance about all this
By "getting links", does this mean finding other sites who are willing to allow me to include their link on my site, or the other way around? Should these links be related to the subject matter of my site?

How does one handle promotion of a website if it is not commercial, but informational only? I think my MSN Groups site Losing Face
turns up in Google searches so reliably because the subject matter is so overworked online, but I don't know.

My other site, Steve Hanlon of Quashnet Valley, defendant in lawsuit is mainly my attempt to make public the fact that this individual is being sued, should anyone enter his name and/or place of employment in a search engine. This is not defamatory, as the lawsuit is public information. But since this case is low priority on the Court dockets (2 YEARS ) I want people who might consider entering into business agreement with him to be forewarned about his potential for deceit. I do not want him ripping off other innocent people as he did to me. I thought the best way to do this was by simply posting the legal document, which is available to anyone who cares to search for such things in the courthouse. I'm not even sure what category to list this under.

I ran a messageboard for 6 years about Facial Plastic Surgery, which was regularly on the first page of Google searches when people entered "botched cosmetic surgery" and like keywords. It was very popular because I allowed posters to name doctors. If you entered a certain doctor's name in a search, the post on my board with his name would come up and everyone would see what he had done to the poster. I know many doctors tried to shut down my board for years, and then finally, last year, one of them was able to do it.
If you visit Losing Face
you will see that I was (unsuccessfully) sued by a high profile plastic surgeon who tried to
force removal of my photos from the Internet. It's encouraging to know that, on rare occasion, money and power are not always enough to silence the truth. Unfortunately, most of the time it is.

Thanks for all the help and for allowing me to talk!

"Getting links" is all about hyperlinks from other sites pointing to yours. For traffic purposes, links from related sites will obviously be best. If you are looking for page rank then it is thought that relevant links are better but I've never seen conclusive evidence of this.

For a non-commercial site there are many free ways of promoting your site, try -

submitting to free directories
links through forum signatures
submitting articles with your site's url in the author's box
reciprocal link exchanges, particularly with similar sites
an ad network, ie the coop or link vault
